Time for a bit of JunOS

On May 19, 2010, in Juniper, by Darren

Now that my CCIP has been completed, I’d like to dive a bit into Juniper. We have a few Junipers in our network and I’d like to learn more about them. The few times I’ve used JunOS already I’ve been impressed.

I might do either the JNCIA-ER or the JNCIS-ER. I’ll see how much time I have.

Juniper do a great job of giving LOTS of free study material on their site, so I suggest you take a look as well.

I’ve gone and configured myself a Juniper Olive (google it) for actual labbing and so on. I might just put up a couple of Juniper labs!

I’ll put up a few things here and there as I go along.

  1. From what I’ve heard, the ER track relies a lot on “services” apparently, which I believe is GRE, NAT etc, which would be fine if the olives supported all of them, but apparently some aren’t.

From the sounds of it, the Olives would cover the JNCIAs and possibly JNCISs, but anything beyond that may be a little difficult.

The M track sounds to be one which doesn’t rely so much on the services

Good call. I’ve been toying with the idea of nabbing the JNCIA-ER myself. Was hoping to put together an Olive in the summer, so post up any labs!

How’s your Juniper studies goin’? I don’t know if it was just me, but after watching the Junos as a Second Language course and comparing the content to the JNCIA-ER exam topics, I didn’t see a correlation. The exam topics seem to target mostly topics related to the maintenance and operational of a Juniper router….was wondering if you got far enough to cross compare that.
